Tot School

Royal is 17 months

Finally back on track…I think!  We haven’t been doing trays, more so just using intentional play as a learning method.  Royal really enjoys the 1 on 1 time and I think he likes having the toys laid out with all the correct items instead of the usual hodgepodge that we end up with.

As with Baloo, we have a lot more outside pictures this week.

This is about as close as we could get him to the rocket.  It really scared him…

Royal helped out in the garden, too!!  Kind of…He was more interested in throwing the dirt and pulling out the water tube, but he did also push some seeds in.

Learning how to be just like big brother!  He insisted on wearing the shin guards.

Now onto more schoolish things.

We painted with finger paints and a sponge thing.  This is one of those $1 tree sponges, but the paint did wash out quite easily.

We also tried out hand at coloring, but had more fun putting the crayons back into the box.

We put lids and caps into an old wipe container.  This captivated both boys for a surprising amount of time.

Learning Toys!

We stacked blocks, knocked them down, and stacked them up again!

We got to do the same thing with bigger blocks, but we also tried to stack these according to size.

We played with our little peg board.  Royal enjoyed putting one into each hole and it seemed like he was putting them in according to color.

This is a little animal train.  You have to stack the pieces and then connect them.  Royal had more fun just running around with it, and then getting Baloo to put it back together.

His newest hiding spot.  Nothing educational about this, I just love it!

Reading!  Royal is getting really into flipping through books and looking at the pictures.  He’ll sit through entire books now and actually snuggles up at bedtime to listen to whatever story we’re reading.

Preschool – China Studies

I won’t pretend like we had the most successful week.  It seems like we’ve had more doctors appointments in the past 2 weeks than in my entire lifetime.  But we’re slowly getting back on track!

We did our regular Calvert lessons this week.  We’re still getting into the routine of Calvert, but I’m really enjoying it.

First, our China studies.  I think I’ll have to find most of the materials for these country studies myself…and I promise to share!  For this first one I am using letteroftheweek.com’s Country Studies, and I’ll probably model other countries off the same kinds of information.

We started by talking about the globe: the oceans, the continents, where we live, etc.   Then we talked about where China is and I guess he understood because he said we couldn’t drive there, we would have to fly.

We printed out this coloring sheet which conveniently also has some Chinese symbols and the Chinese flag right on it!

We also talked about the Chinese language a bit.  We learned how to say hello (ni hao) and goodbye (zai jian) in Chinese and we sang Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.  I happen to know that in Chinese from a short language course in the 3rd grade.  It’s crazy the things that stick with us!

The lyrics to Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star in Chinese:

yi shan, yi shan, liang jing jing

man tian dou shi xiao xing xing

gua zai tian shang fang guang ming

hao xiang xu duo xiao yan jing

yi shan, yi shan, liang jing jing

man tian dou shi xiao xing xing

We’ve finally planted a garden!!  Thankfully it doesn’t get too cold in the winter here in Alabama so we’re able to have winter crops.  Both Baloo and Royal “helped” me put these earth boxes together, and with any luck we’ll have some green beans, squash, dill, spinach, and carrots before long!!  Baloo has asked to check on his plants every day so far.

We’ve actually managed to spend a lot of time in the backyard recently!!  My wonderful DH has been working all month on getting the backyard to a playable state.  When we moved in it was horrible overgrown, full of ants, HUGE spiders, and snakes.  He’s mowed it a few times, cleared out the sticks and such, and put down any killer.

So we got out the Buzz Lightyear sprinkler and let loose!!  The rocket actually shoots straight up into the air and Baloo did a few experiments with setting the water pressure to low, medium, and high, and seeing how far the rocket went. DSC00434DSC00440

We playing with the stacking/nesting blocks.  The boys saw how far they could get the ball to roll down the stack.

Baloo got these Automoblox for his birthday in July and he’s starting to be fascinated with them!!  He made this long car with all different color wheels!

And lastly, we finally got all the books set up on the bookshelf (in the closet on the left, can’t see it here!)  I came back to find both boys engrossed in their books.

That’s it for us this week!!  Next week we are finishing up our China studies with some cooking, a few books and songs, and hopefully some crafty type things!

Starting PreK

We’re back!!!  After a completely unintentional summer break, we’re back.  We’ve moved twice (into a rental house now!) and have celebrated Baloo’s birthday!  My little man is now a full 4 years old!  After spending a good 2 weeks completely overwhelmed with starting PreK, I decided it was time for a more comprehensive curriculum.  I spent a lot of time researching last year, and came to the same conclusion that Calvert was right for us.  We did end up going with PreK even though I think Baloo might be a bit ahead of it.  I think it will set a good foundation for school though, and I will feel more comfortable that we have covered everything he needs to learn in PreK!

We did a half week this week, just to get in the groove.  I intend on supplementing a LOT with Calvert.  We will also be doing Raising Rock Stars Preschool, Math-U-See, and Progressive Phonics as well.

This week we did the first 3 Calvert lessons.  It focused on the color Red, reading a few classic stories (like Peter Rabbit), and concepts like before/after, and left/right.

We’re also using an idea from Carisa at 1+1+1=1.  We got the Kumon My First Book of Drawing and a regular composition notebook that has space at top for drawing, and lines on bottom for writing.  Everyday Baloo has learned to draw something from the book, then draws it in the composition notebook, and narrates a story for me.  The first day was an apple, and the story he wrote had very little to do with the apple but it was cute.  Even better, he immediately wanted to share with Daddy and it’s because a new time for them to share.

Well that’s it for our first week back!!  I actually have plans for next week, and we’re starting our new chore system, eek!
