Christmas Around the U.S.A. Review and Giveaway

Have you ever come across a curriculum so well rounded and put together that you wonder how one person could possibly have done it all? That is this curriculum!!

The Christmas Around the U.S.A. curriculum takes you on a journey through the 50 states and the different Christmas traditions that take place within each state. There is a separate page for each state which includes everything you need for working through that state.

The first thing I noticed with this program was the amount of research and detail that went into every page. Jill found events specific to each state, recommends videos and/or songs, and suggests a movie. She also found many people across the USA to write about their Christmas traditions which are included in letter format and quite interesting to read through.

My favorite part though is the activities for each state. Some activities are coloring, some involve cooking, some are crafts, etc! Despite bring a PDF file, the curriculum is very hands-on and interactive.

I love that we can work with the curriculum for just a bit every day but obtain so much information about the culture and the states!

Here is an example of what you will find in the download! (Picture courtesy of EnchantedHomeschoolingMom.net)

On the first page you can see the shape of the state, some quick facts/events in Texas, and a paragraph with information about traditions in Texas.  Following that is the song/video suggestion, as well as the movie suggestions, and an activity idea!

On the next page you’ll find the ornament to decorate, a little printable info book, and your state postage stamp.

The last page is the individual letter from a family that lives in the state!

I feel so lucky that Jill from Enchanted Homeschooling Mom is offered not one, but TWO of my readers a free copy of the Christmas Around the U.S.A. unit/curriculum!

My printables are a bit from what I usually do.  Instead of activities, I created little cards to be printed out and placed near your Elf on the Shelf while he is caught creating some mischief.  I’ve included a list of 32 relatively simple ideas, and a matching card with a rhyme to go along with the idea.

Also, there are strips to be used at a Christmas countdown chain featuring the elves!

M&M Christmas Tree

You may not have noticed, but the boys recently got haircuts…from me.  Baloo was easy – I just let him play on the iTouch!  Royal however threw a fit.  One for the record books I think.  And it ended with me buying a huge bag of M&Ms to bribe him with (which kind of worked).

Anyway, I was left with quite a few M&Ms.  I’m not quite ready to give up on my 2012 diet yet, so I decided we needed to find another way to use them up.  I had the boys sort them M&Ms based on color.  M&Ms seem to be a great motivator for Royal because he was sorting like crazy!

Then I drew a little Christmas tree.  I started off with dot markers, but the dots were too big.  So I ended up drawing little circles with a marker.  Worked perfectly!  I made all the circles in the Christmas tree shape and told the boys to match the green and brown M&Ms to the little circles.IMG_1740

Once they finished the tree I told them to decorate their trees with the rest of the colors.  Royal didn’t quite get this far.  He was much too distracted with eating the M&Ms.  Baloo had a great time making his tree though! IMG_1748
