Tot School and Preschool Weekly Round-Up

Logi-Bear 23 months
Royal – 3 years 11 months

We’ve had a pretty busy few weeks.  We’re really getting into All About Reading Pre-Reading with Royal.  He loves singing the alphabet song and pointing at the letters.  We often end up doing it multiple times a day!  That’s the only formal curriculum we have, and we’re doing it at his leisure.  He’s really taking to the program though!

I haven’t posted a weekly round-up in a few weeks, so this encompasses our B and C week!

Royal found a bag of shells and wanted to check them out, so we carefully dumped them out into a tub.  He investigated them for quite awhile!  He was comparing them, feeling the soft versus bumpy ones, and testing how fragile they are.

Logi-Bear found our measuring tape and went around “measuring” things for awhile.  This one only comes out to about 5 inches, but I’ve ‘donated’ one of my extra sewing tapes to the boys.  It’s available to them 24/7 so they can measure whatever they want!

We made a bouquet of button flowers.  This was some great fine-motor practice!

First, you string the buttons onto the pipe cleaner.

Then you twist and twist and twist!IMG_0232

Royal liked making large flowers!

We ended up with quite a large bouquet!!  It’s currently sitting in the middle of our table!IMG_0240

We had a small egg hunt.  I put letters A-C, plus a few extras that Royal already knows, into some eggs.  I put an uppercase in one egg, and a lowercase in another egg.
IMG_0260

Then we played a matching game!  Royal was so excited to see his favorite letters in the eggs!

Royal ‘caught’ me baking with Baloo and I promised him that the two of us would bake together.  We’ve never baked together before so I wanted to make something easy.  I picked up a cookie mix at the store that required just 2 extra ingredients.  Royal was able to help measure the butter and crack the egg.  He also poured the mix in and stirred!

I showed him how to drop teaspoon size buts on the cookie sheet and he did really well with it!!

Royal has been very interested in cutting lately.  I got our our collection of fun scissors for him to try out.
IMG_9903

He decided to use different scissors for each line!

We did the ‘color by size’ sheet from my Zoomin Moving ABCs.  Then I cut the buses out and we sorted them by size.

I’m trying to build out letter wall, so I encourage Royal to do at least one letter activity every week.  This week we painted the B…

And added the buses!

He wasn’t so interested in doing the B sheet from All About Reading so we put it in a sheet protector and used it as a playdough mat instead.  First he smushed the B.

Then he used a straw to poke holes in the B

Logi-Bear was having fun with the play-dough and straws!

We recently purchased the All About Reading Pre-Reading level for Royal and wanted to start it right away.  The curriculum goes through the alphabet in ABC order, so I decided to start over with our Zoomin’ Moving Alphabet.  We were in such a transition when I started making these packs that we didn’t really get to use them to their full potential anyway.  And I think Logi-Bear is ready to join us for more now as well!

We started off the week with the A coloring page.  I let Royal choose how to decorate the ambulance and he chose watercolors.  We haven’t used watercolors in a long time!IMG_9770

He spent a long long time painting his ambulance.  And he insisted on painting the letter A red as well.
IMG_9776

He decided that he wanted to decorate the A with gold glitter.  I spread the glue all over the A and let him at it.  It’s also been awhile since we’ve used loose glitter!

We got out our Melissa and Doug wooden letter stamps and did some A and a stamping.
IMG_9780

Royal really enjoyed stamping the lowercase a’s!  Then I gave him some capital A stickers and he put them all over his ambulance (with a little help from Logi-Bear)
IMG_9781

The color of the week (to go with the ambulance theme) was red, so we went on a color hunt!  The boys collected everything red that they could find!  Toys, books, plates, pillows – even my phone!
IMG_9782

When we finished our indoor color hunt, we went for a walk outdoors to find more red things!  We could a red car, tail lights, berries, leaves, fire lanes, benches, and more!  There are plenty of red things outside as well!

Next, I cut up the red color sheet I made when Royal was a lot younger, and we all worked on gluing the images to the sheet.  I had the boys take turns and we named each item (red phone, red flag, red crab, etc)

I printed off the tot school and preK tracing sheets for Royal and Logi-Bear, but Logi-Bear wasn’t really interested.  Royal and I worked through them though!!  We started by finger tracing them…
IMG_9788

And worked up to tracing them!  Royal isn’t feeling confident with his tracing skills (he’s quite the introvert, just like his mama!) so I “helped” him.  I really just touched the tip of the crayon, but it gave him enough confidence to finish!
IMG_9791

I wasn’t sure how Royal would do with the connect the ambulances given that he was so unsure with the tracing, but thought we’d give it a try anyway.  I had him finger trace first and then with a marker.  To my surprise, he loved it!  He had no trouble tracing and this is probably the first time he’s really made a letter!
IMG_9792

When he was finished he insisted on dotting his A with some dot markers.  I figured it was good practice, so why not!
IMG_9796

And when he was finished with that, he wanted to see what color the dots would turned if he used yellow on top.  I wasn’t too fond of the idea honestly (I was worried it would ruin our dot markers) but I let him at it anyway.  He had a great time and found that blue and yellow make green!
IMG_9801

When he finished dotting the A he wanted to use the dot markers some more, so I printed out my dot marker Ambulance for him.  He started by dotting in the circles, but ended up just dotting the entire picture!!
IMG_9803

We decided to print another A sheet and use it for a playdough mat.  I rolled up the playdough for Royal and then had him prick it with a toothpick.  He made little holes all over the A!IMG_9830

When he was done with the toothpick I asked him to ‘smush’ the A with his fingers!  He was more than happy to oblige!
IMG_9832

We ended up with a very smushed A!

Tot School and PreK Roundup

Tot School - Royal BalooLogi-Bear is 21 months
Royal is 33 months

We’re starting to get back into the routine of school and involving Logi-Bear more often.  I try to get all the boys involved in as many activities together as possible, and it works out sometimes.

Here are some of our activities from this week:

We did some fine motor work with an empty parmesan cheese can and spaghetti noodles!  I set this up for Logi-Bear and then let him figure out the rest.

He loved putting the noodles into the little holes!

For Royal, to make it a bit more challenging, I gave him these thick straws.  He had to be more accurate when he tried to put them in.  He also loved this activity!

I bought these plastic shot glasses at the grocery store.  My intention was to use them in sensory bins, but they are great for other things too!  Logi-Bear can grip them just right, so I know they are the perfect size.
This is how I set them up for him to play with one day.
Tot School Ideas - Royal Baloo

He loved to stack them up over and over again!

When his interest peaked, I pulled out some cheerios.
Tot School Ideas - Royal Baloo

We practice putting a few cheerios into each cup, and dumping them back and forth.  And then I lined them up 0-10 and put the coordinating amount of cheerios in each.  We counted each time I put cheerios in, and then counted all the cups a few times after we finished!  For some reason, he thought the counting was hilarious!

We did a LOT of pouring from one cup to another.

When Royal joined us, I made 2 sets of 1-4.  Then I had him count them and match them!

Here they are in order, after he matched them together!

Both Logi-Bear and Royal seemed to enjoy the towers, so I showed them how to make a towel end to end.  Royal was pretty sure I couldn’t do it!  As I was going I kept asking him which color was next, red or blue?  He didn’t even know he was practicing patterning!
Tot School Ideas - Royal Baloo

After my tower fell over we did more patterning “work”.  I set out the first 5 cups and had him continue the pattern after that.

I switched up the Parmesan container/pasta activity for Logi-Bear one day and gave him some mini penne pasta.  This seemed to work better for him since they don’t break as easily as spaghetti noodles!

We’re started working on some preschool activities with Royal.  Right now we are working through the Animal ABCs from 1+1+1=1 as well as my own Terrific Truck ABCS (which are getting a bit of a makeover Smile).  We started with letter A is for Alligator and Ambulance.
Wouldn’t lucky have it that we had the opportunity to meet, touch, pet, and hold an alligator this weekend?  There were 2 alligators at this event – one was a 9 year old albino alligator named powder (pictured below).  She was very calm and tolerant, and at one point even started to fall asleep!  The other alligator was a small baby (1 year old!) and named Amos.  All of the boys had an opportunity to hold Amos!

That was it for our week!  We had a lot of F-U-N and I actually can’t wait to do it again next week (which is not something I always say!!)
