Shark Unit

I love shark week.  Though…I’m not sure why.  I don’t care for sharks, but even more so, deep water gives me anxiety.  So I can’t actually watch shark week.  I think part of it is that everyone else gets so excited that I feed off the energy, and the other part is that the boys often end up watching sharks on the couch snuggled up with daddy.  Those moments are pretty amazing!

Anyway, when I realized it was shark week this week, I was excited.  And then I remembered the little reader book about sharks in the Target One Spot.  Let’s just say, within 2 hours we had gone to target and back home with the shark book.

I decided to make a short unit study for Baloo with the book.  It’s right at his level for length and he enjoys reading about sharks!  I decided to make it someone he could do independently, so the prompts are pretty easy to find in the text.

The questions can be found on the page with the title Lanternshark and Lemon Shark.  Then picture and maze are fun extras.

Unfortunately, I can not find this book online anywhere.  I wrongly assumed that the book would be on amazon…every book is on amazon!!  I’m sure this information could be found online or in other books, but for a 2nd grader, it probably wouldn’t be as much independent work.  Target should have the book though, and it’s just $1!

I made this unit with Baloo in mind, and he’s at a second grade.  He reads very well, but he’s needs practice on reading for longer periods of time.
I think this unit could be appropriate for a first grader.  As for a 3rd grader…I’m not sure.  I think it might be a bit simple?  I’ve never had a 3rd grader so I cannot say!

The unit covers Mako Shark, Whitetip Reef Shark, Lantern Shark, Lemon Shark, Great White Shark, Blacktip Reef Shark, TIger Shark, Blue Shark, Wobbegone Shark, Thresher Shark, Hammerhead Shark, Silky Shark, Pygmy Shark, Whale Shark, and Sawshark.

  1. Thank you for this wonderful unit study! I rarely make it to Target, but a few weeks ago I was there and picked up this book in the $1 section. It is a bit easy for my third grade son, but I thought I could throw it in the baby’s diaper bag for a little light reading when we’re out and about. He wasn’t very interested. Then I introduced this unit study to take a break from our regular science. He is super excited!! He cheerfully read the entire book to his three younger sisters, plus worked three pages in one sitting. Again, thank you!!
