Star Wars Addition Mats for Math Fun

When I heard the new Star Wars movie was going to be out this week I knew it was time to take advantage of their love for Star Wars.  Star Wars math?  Check!  Star Wars writing?  You bet.

And maybe when we’re done we will see a Star Wars movie!

This is a kind of spontaneous 3 day Star Wars event.  I just couldn’t let the new movie go by without a mention!  Plus, my kids really love Star Wars…

Supplies Needed for the Star Wars Addition Mats

Laminator (or just the self adhesive sheets)
Gems (or other small items)
Dry Erase Markers

 

I know this mat will be used for a long time so we just laminated it.  My kids go nuts over Star Wars and this is bound to be a hit.

How to Use the Star Wars Addition Mats

We use these as an add-on to our existing curriculum.  When we are exploring new topics or learning new facts, we get out something like an addition mat or number line.  They are much more willing to practice math with fun themes and manipulatives!

I try to make sure to have at least two colors of gems so we can clearly see the two addends.  We typically start with setting out the gems.  Then comes the BB-8 number cards.  Finally we write in the answer at the top.

Sometimes I write and sometimes they write.  Sometimes I come up with equations and sometimes they do.  There is not right and wrong way to do this!

How cute is little BB-8?  I think that robot is my favorite character is all of the Star Wars enterprise.
