Christmas Tree Addition Mazes for Fun Addition Practice

Christmas time means busy, busy, busy – right?  Is it just me?  We don’t even start shopping for presents until later in the month but we are just busy.  There are so many events and exciting things in December.  We always end up slacking off school a bit in December and we do “Christmas school” a whole lot.  What is Christmas school?  It really just means that we add a Christmas (or Hanukkah, sometimes) flair to our work.  We don’t just do reading – we do Christmas reading!  We don’t just do math – we do Christmas math!  Etc etc.

Items to Use for the Christmas Tree Addition Maze

We love using dot markers for pretty much everything but sometimes they get old or we want to reuse a sheet.  So we have a running stock of other dot marker size items that we can use.  It helps to keep the pages fresh for the boys.

Glass gems
Cheerios
LEGO Blocks
Pegs
Circle Stickers
Any small stickers (like these Christmas ones!)
Money
Finger prints from a stamp pad

How to Use the Christmas Tree Addition Mazes

These are actually pretty straight-forward!  I gave a lot number to Logi-Bear (5) to see if he would understand, and he had 0 trouble with it.  In fact, I was a bit surprised at how quickly he understood it.

I just pointed to the start on the star and told them to only dot the circles where the addends added to 5 (or whatever number was on their page).  The arrow at the bottom of the page tells you where you should finish.  The only question they had was “Do we dot the star, too?”.  I let them choose (they didn’t…not sure why!)

Royal decided to do a pattern when he dotted his.  So when he finished the maze he went back and finished the pattern.  I think it turned out kind of pretty.  I was just excited because he was really proud when he was done!
