Baloo just turned 7 and we had a small family party for him. We had planned on swimming, grilling, and just being together.
But mother nature had a different plan, and it rained the entire day. Not a big deal though, because Grandpa had a very fun idea to make a treasure hunt that led to all of Baloo’s presents! It took maybe an hour to plan and execute, and Grandpa really hit it out of the park.
First, we used some scrapbook paper that was old looking and ripped the sides. Then we decided on where we would hide the presents and made a little map. Lastly, Grandpa came up with the plot of the letter and all the clues and prompts.
This is what the treasure map says:
Billy the Kidd’s Secret Treasure Map
Legend says Bill the kid roamed these parts in the days of Indian wars and gunslingers. They say Billy left behind some treasures and never came back again. Follow the clues to find Billy’s hidden treasures.
A. Billy liked his chow. Wander on over to the place people chow down and have a look see.
B. Billy was a good rider – on horses that is. Check out the barn.
C. Some say Billy was lazy – he liked his shuteye. He likely left a treasure where he snoozed.
D. Old Billy liked his shows – course there was no TV or radio in them thar days, just at the theater. Wonder where you’d find a treasure in today’s theater?
E. Back in Billy’s day, you had to “go” in an out-house. Pretty stinky and buggy in those days. Hopefully Billy didn’t leave a treasure down the hole.
F. Billy the Kid was a downright sneak. If he dared you to a shootout, he’d hide in the last place you’d look. Where might that be?
A. Kitchen Table
D. Living Room
F. Grandpa’s Room
I’m not sure if Baloo enjoyed the treasure hunt, or receiving presents more. But I do know that he had a blast! All the boys have asked for treasure hunts on their birthdays from now on!
The last part of the fun birthday party were these Viking cupcakes. Baloo is very into How To Train Your Dragon right now. When I went to Pinterest for ideas, these popped out. SO simple and very effective. He loved them!
