Easy Kids Coding Lessons with BitsBox
My kids are better with electronics that me. How did this happen?
Don’t get me wrong, I knew this day would come, just not that it would come so soon. I consider myself fairly up to date on technology! But they know more.
So when Baloo wanted to learn to code I didn’t even know where to start. We’ve looked into various programs but with my lack of coding knowledge, I couldn’t pick a good program or help him with any of it! When he felt frustrated (and he did) I couldn’t help him.
Then I heard about BitsBox and I was intrigued. I didn’t quite understand what they could put in a box that would help with coding, but people can be really creative! BitsBox is a monthly subscription coding box.
(We received this product for this review. All of the opinions in this post and mine (and my kids) 🙂 )
TLDR
- Simple
- Great for independent work
- FUN
- They can make and play their own apps
- And a special discount!
BitsBox Can be Used Independently
I love the idea of receiving a monthly subscription box but frankly, I don’t always have the time to sit down the second they come (and naturally, the boys want to do it immediately). So having a box that can be done mostly independently is a huge bonus.
The BitsBox came with a handful of coding cards (probably 10 or more) plus coding cards in the trading card size. Each of these cards can occupy them for 10 minutes to an hour, easily. This is not a box that you open and finish within 30 minutes. In fact, there is enough material to last a full month.
Baloo, our budding coder, would just choose a card, and sit down at the computer to figure it out. Each card has instructions for creating an app. Then at the end there is a challenge or two where they have to use what they know to figure something out. So they learn something and then test their knowledge.
There are also additional cards that can be used with the apps to give them extra material, extra tips and tricks, extra information, etc.
BitsBox is Exciting
I knew Baloo would enjoy the BitsBox but he was even more excited than I ever imagined. First, he found fast success with the cards. It bolstered his self-esteem and he just wanted to keep going.
Second, and the best part, you can play the apps on a phone. This was probably the most exciting part for Baloo. The apps are simple but being able to see his work on a phone made him proud. If he was excited about coding before, it was nothing compared to his feelings now.
Benefits of BitsBox
I see multiple benefits of BitsBox. First, it’s simple to get started. I’m pretty sure that Royal (7) would have no problem with some of these cards. They are step-by-step. Even the challenges have hints for kids having trouble.
Second, quick successes means they’re enthusiastic about continuing and their confidence in coding soars. Coding can be so challenging and complex – I think a simple introduction and quick success to boost confidence is perfect.
Third, the apps are cute, hilarious, and engaging. One day I heard my kids cracking up laughing at the apps for a solid hour. Even though Baloo is the one working on the material, Royal and Logi-Bear are soaking up the excitement.
Fourth, the BitsBox required no extra knowledge from me. This was a big one for me since I am not a coder. I can work my way through HTML and even a bit of CSS if I want, but coding? It’s not happening. So having an outlet where Baloo can learn to code, and code well, within having to rely on a base on my knowledge, it absolutely wonderful.
