Pumpkin Acrostic Poems

I really enjoy poetry. I’m not sure what is it about poems but I’ve enjoyed them for most of my adult life.

So I love opportunities to introduce my kids to poetry, too.

But I’m very careful as to how we do because it’s easy to turn kids off of poetry.

I think acrostic poems are great for an introduction to poetry. They’re so simple and can be written fairly quickly.

Plus, they lack the rules that other types of poetry often have (I’m looking at you, Haiku).

And I always love including fun themes with our work. Pumpkin themed acrostic poetry seemed like such a fun idea!

Why Acrostic Poems?

I think there is value in all types of poetry and I love learning new styles.

Acrostic poems are great because there are few rules. There is not a specific meter in which you need to adhere to, you don’t need to rhyme at all, and you can use as many words as you need.

But acrostic poems still give you a structure to use (the starting letter of each line) which can help us to make decisions as to what we are writing.

Plus, acrostic poems are fun!

How to Write a Pumpkin Acrostic Poem

When I want to write an acrostic poem, I find it very helpful to have a list of words that start with the letters I need. This is especially helpful when I’m not exactly sure what I want to say.

So I always start off by making a list for each letter of the poem.

This is especially helpful with themed acrostic poems as I can narrow down some of the words to pumpkin or fall specific words.

Step 1 to Writing an Acrostic Poem

Think about what you want to say in your poem.

For instance, in writing about pumpkins I might focus on turning a pumpkin into a Jack O’ Lantern. I might decide to reminisce about going to the pumpkin patch as a kid. Or I might go into a detailed description of pumpkins.

There are so many things to say in a poem. But if you know ahead of time what you want to talk about, it’ll make it easier to choose the applicable words.

Try to let your kids explore this idea on their own because giving suggestions. If they’re really stuck, try to help them come up with a topic.

Step 2

The next step is picking out some words. Not everyone will need to do this step but I highly recommend it for kids or anyone new to acrostic poems.

There is a brainstorm sheet included in the printable.

First, write down all the words you can think of that start with each letter.

If you feel like you need more words, consult a dictionary to help you add more words.

A thesaurus can be helpful here, too. If you know have a word you want to use but it doesn’t quite fit, check a thesaurus!

Step 3

Planning. Start writing! You might want to start on a piece of notebook paper first so you can write it out as much as you want.

Write it all down and then edit!

Make sure you like the flow, the words you’ve chosen, the meaning behind the poem, etc.

When you’re happy with the final poem…

Step 4

Write it nicely on the final paper!

You can color in the paper, as well, to make it look even nicer.

If you really want, mount it on colored paper (like construction paper)
