Spooky Spider Counting Mats for Math Practice

Spiders creep me out.  I don’t like them and would just assume never ever see them.  However, they do eat mosquitoes for which I am eternally grateful.  It’s a conflicting relationship.  But the boys are still into creep crawly stuff so I oblige.  We actually went to a bug festival a few weekends ago which was really icky, for me.  I will admit, these spider counting mats are actually kind of cute.

Before I get too far, I want to mention the 31 Days of Printables event!  I actually did 31 Days of Homeschool Printables a few years ago but this one is going to be even better.  At least, I think so!

Cassie from 3Dinosaurs.com and I have teamed up and we are both doing a printable every day for the month of October!  We will be doing a new theme every week and coming out with a great selection of printables!  I have a special newsletter list just for these printables.  One e-mail a week with a link to every printable (Cassie’s and my own) that we’ve put out!  You can sign up here:

Using the Spider Counting Mats

Back to the Spider Counting Mats!  We typically use these for counting although with Logi-Bear getting more into addition, we are doing that as well.  We used googly eyes and black gems for the counting and math.  Usually I include a printable portion but the googly eyes are too perfect for this (and printable eyes would be painfully small).  If you don't have google eyes, perhaps use a hole punch to make a few eyes to use instead.

We started by adding eyes.  Happy little spider with so many eyes!  I thought it would be creepy but it's not all that creepy after all!

Addition with Spider Counting Mats

Then we added the gems!  You could also use two different color gems to represent 0+5, 1+4, and 2+3, if you wanted to use them for addition.  The mats go from 1-10 so there are mats to practice many different numbers!
