Gummi Bear Science

The boys love candy and I love making them happy Smile  But we can’t just have candy all the time – so I make an excuse that we need candy for an experiment or activity and then we can buy and enjoy some candy on the side.

Our latest experiment was figuring out the best way to dissolve gummi bears.  We decided to try water, salt water, and sugar water.  We also left one in an open cup.  We should have kept an additional one in a baggie to be a control, but I forgot about that!

I had Baloo and Royal stir in the salt…

and the sugar.

Then we choose a color for each, and dropped them in!

After just a few hours the gummi bear in the salt (on the right) was reduced to nearly nothing, and the gummi bear in the sugar water (on the left) was reduced greatly.

We left the gummi bears in the water for another day and then decided to investigate.

The green had turned into a blob or sorts.

We dumped out the water and put the green blob in a small cup to explore it.  We touched it and smelled it.

The sugar water looked empty, but there was a small blob in there too!!  It was pretty similar to the one just in plain water.

The salt water one had completely dissolved, although you could still see the color in the cup!

We determined that the best way to dissolve gummi bears was to eat them!  Or use salt water Smile
