Pumpkin Addition Clip Cards for Fun Math Practice
It is day 4 of Pumpkin week! Make sure to sign up for the newsletter for an exclusive freebie (easy reader) and all the printable updates!
Also, don’t forget that Cassie and Deidre have their own 5 pumpkin printables to share!
How to Set Up the Addition Clip Cards
There are two parts to this set – the clip cards and the recording sheets. They can be used together or separately.
The clip cards all have 4-5 correct answers on them. They do include every combination of numbers that add up to a sum but not every possibility. For instance, 6+4 might be on the 10 card but not 4+6.
The recording sheet has space for all of the possibilities.
To set up:
Print the clip cards on cardstock and laminate them. They will last much longer this way.
The recording sheets can be printed on regular paper.
Make sure to gather some clip cards for the activity, too! Five should be plenty if you want to do one clip card at a time.
How to Use the Pumpkin Addition Clip Cards
You can start with the recording sheet, the clip cards, or work through both together. This activity is very flexible (I love flexible!)
For the clip cards, simply offer clothespins and the clip card. Let them work out the addition and clip the answers they think are correct.
The smaller numbers have a few repeated facts and also facts that are reversed (i.e. the 1+2 and 2+1). Feel free to point out that pattern. Sometimes kids get bogged down by the order of the numbers instead of just the numbers.
For the recording sheet, I find it helpful to use manipulatives. If you were working on the number 5, start by offering 5 manipulatives in one color and 5 in another. Show them how to make combinations of the two colors that make up the number 5.
Eventually, you’ll cover all of the possibilities!
