1st Grade Secular Homeschool Curriculum Choices
It’s that time of year – back to school! I don’t tend to do a big back to school shindig. We, more or less, school year round and dump things that aren’t working as we go.
We have two main focuses this year: Kindness and Experiences. Kindness because we’ve developed a sarcastic tendency and I feel like it’s hurting at this point and not helping. So we’re going to work on Kindness.
And experiences because they are such a great way to learn. We have a few great museums here but we have a lot of great hiking spots. So we are trying to hike regularly and just enjoy being outside and experiencing life.
On top of that, I have some academic goals for each of the boys. For Logi-Bear, we want to improve his reading level and keep pace with math. Then we are throwing in some more ‘core’ subjects with a fun base.

(We are using this sparingly with Logi-Bear until he’s advanced a bit more in his reading. He enjoys the projects though, so it’s working well!)

Real Science Odyssey
(We didn’t finish Bio 1 last year. I haven’t decided if we will finish that before moving on or if we will skip around)
Magic School Bus
History:
I’m putting together my own history program but it’s not ready yet. We will be focusing on Ancient History this year. Look for that to start rolling out soon.
We’re also incorporating some electives as they become interested. I’m using Unit Studies to go in depth in those interests.
Homeschool Co-Op
We are lucky to have an amazing and wonderfully secular co-op that we attend (Actually, I’m on the board, so we do a little more than attend!). It’s only for elective classes, which is just what I wanted. So a lot of extras are taken care of through the co-op.
For instance, this semester he is taking beginning electronics, math circle, and yoga and mindfulness.
We are excited to see what this year brings and the new interests that develop!
