Five Green and Speckled Frogs and Counting Printables
Annoying as it is, I love this song. I can’t explain it…something about gross frogs eating gross bugs entertains me. Or maybe it’s because the boys find the song hilarious! Either way, I made some props to go with the story.
Enjoy the song and working on counting skills with your kids!
Five Green and Speckled Frogs Props
This is such a fun little counting song. And it’s not one I remember hearing as a kid. I think it’s nice incorporating some new songs of this type so they don’t get old and repetitive.
My kids have always enjoyed singing songs and especially some of these repetitive ones. It’s never been a struggle to get them to sing along.
But I wanted to make some props so we could act out the song as well.
Plus, I knew they’d be excited to have something to hold while we sing.
And these props will be great for kids who don’t want to sing along. They’ll have something else they can do while listening.
Facts to Share with Your Preschooler
If your kids love this song as much as mine, it might be a great time to share some frog facts!
- Frogs Are Amphibians 🌊 Frogs are special animals called amphibians. This means they can live both in the water and on land. They have slimy, smooth skin that helps them stay cool and moist.
- Life Cycle Magic 🔄 Frogs have an amazing life cycle. They start as tiny eggs in the water, hatch into tadpoles with tails, then grow legs and lose their tails to become full-grown frogs. It’s like a magical froggy transformation! Learn about their life cycles with this life cycle of a frog activity!
- Lily Pad Lounging 🌿 Frogs love to hang out on lily pads. Imagine having a big, green leaf as your comfy couch! They use lily pads to rest, sunbathe, and even catch tasty bugs.
- Big Jumpers 🚀 Frogs are incredible jumpers! They use their long and strong legs to leap really far. Some frogs can jump over 20 times their own body length. That’s like you jumping over a whole school bus!
- Croaky Concerts 🎶 You know that sound frogs make? It’s called “croaking.” Different frog species have different croaks, just like how we have our own unique voices. They croak to talk to other frogs and find friends or tell everyone to stay out of their pond!
- Slurp, Slurp, Yum! 🐜 Frogs are big fans of bugs. They use their sticky tongues to catch insects like flies and mosquitoes. It’s like a froggy fast-food feast!
- Hibernation Hideaways 🛌 In cold weather, some frogs take a long nap called hibernation. They find cozy spots like mud at the bottom of ponds or under leaves to snuggle in. When it gets warmer, they wake up and start hopping around again.
- Camouflage Pros 🍃 Frogs are masters of disguise. They can change colors to match their surroundings, helping them hide from hungry animals. It’s like having an invisible cloak, just like in your favorite storybooks!
- Froggy Friends Everywhere 🌍 Frogs live all over the world, from rainforests to deserts and even in your own backyard. Some are big, some are small, but they’re all amazing.
How to use the 5 Green and Speckled Frog Props
First of all, I recommend printing the frogs on cardstock so they are sturdy. Ours were a little big and floppy.
We set ours up using an old egg carton – a cardboard box or styrofoam would work, too! I wanted to use something we already had laying around instead of trying to find something new for this.
Print your frogs, cut them out, and glue each one to a popsicle stick. Then secure them in your egg carton/box/styrofoam/etc and get ready to sing the song!
Now get ready to sing the song.
Here are the lyrics, if you don’t know.
Five green and speckled frogs
Sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs – yum yum
One jumped into the pool
Where it was nice and cool
Now there are 4 green and speckled frogs.
Four green and speckled frogs
Sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs – yum yum
One jumped into the pool
Where it was nice and cool
Now there are 3 green and speckled frogs.
Etc etc down to 1.
Last line:
Now there are no green and speckled frogs!
So at the start of each verse I would have him pick up one frog. The frog would dance, hop on a bug, and then jump into the pool.
Then he could choose a new frog for the next verse.
Sometimes we would pause in between verses to count the frogs and make sure the song was still accurate.
It was just too irresistible for Baloo! He had to get in on the action too. Lots of frogs hopping into pools!
I love this song too and those frogs are so cute! Thanks for sharing!
