Fraction Matching
One of the things that I’ve been meaning to work on with Baloo is fractions. Fractions have always been a tough spot for me, and something that I just didn’t get until it was presented in the right way. I’ve been struggling to find the right way to present it to him when it hit me – clear plastic cups! I measured out 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup, and 1/4 cup. Then I made an additional set and let him match them.
Since I had written the numbers on the cups, he had no trouble. I think if we were to play it again I’d have him guess before looking.
After matching we were able to look closely to see the difference between the amounts. I combined the two 1/2 cups and we noticed that two halves make a whole! We combined the two quarter cups and noticed it was 1/2! We played with them for awhile!!
I’m hoping that we can try this again and again with difference materials – cheerios, rice, beans, etc! I’m also going to add in 2/3 and 3/4 soon!
This is a very cool idea! I also struggled with fractions myself. Thanks!
What a great idea! I'm going to do this with my 7 and 9 year old soon. Thanks for sharing. Lucinda
