Climate Change for Kids Curriculum
But if you’re not trained in the sciences, this can seem like an overwhelming task (heck, even if you are trained in the sciences it can seem like an overwhelming task).
And when a topic pops up that is more than just basic science (*ahem climate change) we might just start to shut down.
So I was super excited to see that Blair Lee (author of R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Biology 2 and Chemistry 2) was writing a hands oncourse on Climate Change. I was even more excited when I got my hands on it and it turned out to be everything I wanted and more.
TL:DR
- Hands on
- Explained in explicit detail
- Simple enough for a kid to understand (adults too)
- It provides Suggestions for Improving the Situation
Hands on Climate Change Course
Yes, it’s truly hands on! It includes multiple hands on activities that truly illustrate the factors being discussed. I think the course itself is great for slightly older kids (it’s just right for Baloo at age 11) but with the hands on activities, my younger kids will get a lot out of it as well.
Explained in Explicit and Simple Detail
The trouble with climate change is that most descriptions are not nearly sufficient enough. But people also don’t have a great attention span so it’s hard to fit in a sufficient description that people will also read.
This course provides a lot of detail but it’s broken up into four easier to digest segments. So you won’t lose their attention span, it’s easier to fully grasp each part, and it’s simple to see the whole picture of climate change.
In addition, the facts are broken down to the simplest form so that everyone can understand what is going on. Some of these concepts are so huge (literally, I mean! The whole atmosphere huge) that trying to grasp that intensity is tough. Especially for young kids. But this course does a great job of breaking it down to simpler parts.
Suggestions for Improving Climate Change
It’s no use just telling us how bad everything is without recommendations for change. So I was pleased to see the suggestions for what we can personally do.
I know my kids will feel a lot more passionate about these changes after going through the course and seeing the suggestions in a book (as opposed to me telling them what to do).
